Yesterday for dinner I made Black Lentils with Caramelized Onions for band, and everyone agreed it was tasty. I served it with rye toast and butter. And then J brought stuffed grape leaves and M brought a pizza and it was really a feast. We drank hot toddies made with Crown Royal, cinnamon sticks, cloves, hot water and Apple Cider Syrup. Delicious!
I am making Chocolate Nutella Sea Salt Fudge for family, and it is currently in the fridge setting. FYI it's a bit of a wrist work out.
The fruitcake is still in the oven, and has at least another 2 hours to go. I just have to finish a slipper, assemble all the slippers, wrap everything and pack to leave tomorrow.
I'm going to go drink some eggnog to get ready. :-P

Prepping for Fall
As I went to put new laces in my laceup, every day shoes, I realized that it was a perfect opportunity to waterproof them. So I pulled out the spray can of leather proofing (no green methods here!) and went to town. I did those lace ups, two pairs of boots, my leather jacket, Misters leather jacket and a pair od Mister's lace ups. It's a beautiful suny day, and all of these items are hanging out in the sunshine on the front porch, waiting for the hour of "curing". I should also get polish and massage in some conditioning (LUSH's ultrabalm is excellent for this).
But before I get to that, I need to finish up the furniture rearranging that Mister and I started yesterday.
As an aside, the iPad hates posting, as it likes to ignore characters or spaces.

Hmm

Sometimes, I wish that whatever change we'll see happens NOW. And immediately. I want to have to make a decision and stick to it -- not through strength of will, but because it's the only working option. I want my family to be full-time on board, and my fiance to not have stupid fights with me about the usefulness of pantries (for "there will always be grocery stores").
How long did it take for the Depression to be in full swing? Were there people who never noticed? Were there people immediately effected with their neighbors confused?
I'm reading old posts of Sharon's blog, and it just makes me long for a farm. The chances of my having a farm? So slim. But I want it. I don't know what to do with it, but I want it.
I keep trying to dive into activities that I KNOW need wading. So I buy too many seeds, and plant none of them. I lust after canners and jars, but have no produce or recipes to use. I keep saying "next year I'll..."
When will next year arrive? Please let it just arrive with a big crash. I don't want to be alone with this.

Am I Too Weird Now?
At my new apartment, I had left a pile of compost materials in a plastic dish on the counter.
One roommate complains about the garbage everywhere, and the other says that she threw it out "for me".
What if I just wanted my compost?
How do I go about trying to keep plastic to a minimum, recycling to a maximum, and eco-friendly cleaners?
They buy veggie burgers and "Women's Protein Powder". ... what? Since when do women have different protein needs than men? Last I checked, protein was protein to a human body. Egads.
I am feeling very very leery about the house meeting we're having on Sunday. I have the feeling that I'm in a very small minority here.
Reading these posts every day, my last household, my mother's attitude, and my forgiving fiance have allowed me the luxury of feeling like this was NORMAL. I forgot that we were more "revolutionaries". :-P
Kathy Harrison over at the Just In Case Book Blog had a post recently (although I can't find it) about how she's so glad that she has the internet community to make up for the lack of one in real life. I was like "oh so true" but it clearly hadn't been up until now.
Note to self: tone down doom light for easily spooked roommates.
EDIT: I guess it was over at Retro Housewife Goes Green and not the Just In Case Book Blog.

Direction!
Well, I actually bit the bullet and posted on CL for a Foraging Mentor. I kept looking at everyone's posts about "yay the ramps/dandelions/fill-in-the-blank-with-spring-"weed"-of-your-choice are up, and we're eating them and they're delicious!" and thinking "man, if only I knew how to do that..."
It is POSTED! Hopefully someone knowledgeable will respond and be like "Why yes I am wise in the ways of foraging and would love to teach you the mystical paths upon which to walk". Because they will surely talk like that. Yup.
Also, I should think about and blog the preparations I would like to accomplish in Shiny New Apartment With New Roommates Who Aren't Doomers. [Clearly, I'm in a silly mood tonight.]
Will update as the situation changes.
