So I bought four bunches of rhubarb today, and I'm trying to decide what recipes I want to make. I've narrowed it down a bit, but still!
Rhubarb Vodka
Rhubarb Wine
Final Decision
Based upon how much rhubarb I have, and what I want to eat most, I've decided to make the following:
rhubarb cornmeal tart
lentil rhubarb soup
cavalier ginger and rhubarb ketchup (halve the recipe for two pints)
victorian BBQ sauce (halve the recipe for two pints)
rhubarb-ginger syrup
big crumb coffeecake
rhubarb streusel muffins
I'd need to buy another 10 lbs. of rhubarb to make the rest of the recipes as listed.
My grocery list for these items:
-- powdered sugar (I believe I finally worked through all of my powdered sugar!)
-- butter
-- milk
-- white cornmeal or semolina
-- carrots?
-- celery
-- onions
-- sour cream (2 c.)
-- white wine vinegar
-- ginger (2 "knobs" + 1 c.)
-- dried chilis
-- raisins
-- pint jars
-- eggs
-- baking soda
Additional Grocery List:
-- ravioli
-- potatoes
-- tomato sauce (opened the last jar!)
-- buttermilk
-- fruits/veggies
-- cheddar
-- mozzarella
A blog to help keep track of the latest in doomer news, as well as plans for the present and future.

Meal Planning
So yet again, Mister and I have eaten out far more than we ought. I love to blame it on him, but time after time he goes "oh I'm hungry" and I merely say "mm... me too..." without having a conscious idea of what we can make or what food is in the house. We also have a fridge full of rotting leftovers, in case anyone's wondering. :-P
Because of this, yesterday, Mister and I sat down and planned this week's menu:
Monday: rice, beans and cheese
Tuesday: enchiladas
Wednesday: pasta and meat sauce, garlic bread
Thursday: Mac n cheese
Friday: X
Saturday: Lasagne, garlic bread
Sunday: leftovers
There will be a salad accompanying all of these meals. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday I work late, and so Mister will be preparing these meals. On Friday, Mister is eating out with his mother (who will only be in town that day).
Shopping List:
-- tortillas/masa
-- enchilada sauce (I've tried making it and had severe fail)
-- black olives
-- salad mix
-- ground beef
-- bay leaf
-- thyme, oregano?
-- ricotta
-- mozzerella
-- milk
-- loaf for garlic bread
On a lighter note, Mister and I had a huge fight about food storage this weekend. Grr. I still don't know where he stands on that kind of thing. I know he doesn't really care about doomer prep, but I figured he didn't care if -I- did it... oh well. More to hash out!

Spending
Since Mister and I are having to be frugal, I figured it'd be a good idea for me to keep track of what I'm actually spending. Also, taking a leaf out of Allie's book to write down the itemization.
Yesterday, I went to the grocery store and bought:
-- 2 broccoli crowns @ $1.21 (saved $.40)
-- 5# box of clementines @ $4.99 (saved $3.00)
-- bag of frozen corn @ $1.79
-- 2# of pasta @ $1.98 (saved $.72)
-- 1# mozz. @ $5.49
-- 1/2 gallon of skim milk @ $2.39
-- 2 1/2# blocks of Cabot cheese @ $5.98
-- half gallon of Simply Orange oj @ $2.99 (saved $.90)
-- 1 donut @ $.69
So I saved $5.02 all total, and spent $27.51 all total (including $.05 tax). Hopefully that should last us for a while. I bought some stuff we don't normally buy (clementines, juice, broccoli) in an endeavor to get us to eat healthy stuff while we're living on the cheap.

Hmm
Sometimes, I wish that whatever change we'll see happens NOW. And immediately. I want to have to make a decision and stick to it -- not through strength of will, but because it's the only working option. I want my family to be full-time on board, and my fiance to not have stupid fights with me about the usefulness of pantries (for "there will always be grocery stores").
How long did it take for the Depression to be in full swing? Were there people who never noticed? Were there people immediately effected with their neighbors confused?
I'm reading old posts of Sharon's blog, and it just makes me long for a farm. The chances of my having a farm? So slim. But I want it. I don't know what to do with it, but I want it.
I keep trying to dive into activities that I KNOW need wading. So I buy too many seeds, and plant none of them. I lust after canners and jars, but have no produce or recipes to use. I keep saying "next year I'll..."
When will next year arrive? Please let it just arrive with a big crash. I don't want to be alone with this.

A New Post! Whee! Also, Groceries
A lot of folks have been talking about what they eat, how they eat it, and why. What they buy, what they grow, what they make. As I will be moving soon, I'd like to have a solid idea on my shopping budget so that I can actually save money like I'm supposed to -- instead of eating out a lot.
Food Pyramid Style!
Grains:
-- Maseca to make tortillas -- retardedly easy folks
-- rice in bulk
-- maybe buy bread and freeze it -- or get into making bread (buying day old?)
-- oatmeal and other hot grains
-- cornmeal in bulk
-- flour and such for my forays into baking -- I really can't see my baking cupboard diminishing
Vegetables:
-- when in season, I will shop at the farmers markets
-- frozen veggies are great in stirfrys and soups
-- perhaps I will be able to actually plant this year?
-- root veggies in bulk (potatoes, carrots, parsnips, turnips, etc.)
-- canned tomato products
Fruits:
-- canned fruits such as applesauce, pineapple rings, perhaps pears, etc.
-- ... maybe splurge and buy oranges for lunch en route to work?
[N.B. I'm terrible at incorporating fruits and veggies into my life]
Dairy:
-- cheese -- maybe I'll learn how to make it! Would that save me money? ... I could see milk being a hell of a lot cheaper than cheese...
-- powdered milk, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed are all shelf stable and should be staples
-- eggs definately, perhaps milk?
Protein:
-- dried beans in bulk
-- buy meat in large quantities when on sale, and freeze (it makes for an easy meal when you pull a hand cut chop out of the freezer and pop it in a frying pan with spices)
-- sausages are usually cheaper, so buy large quantities of those, and freeze as well
-- soy products? I'm not sure
Misc.:
-- lard, shortening or butter
-- sugars in bulk -- honey? maple syrup (not my fave)?
And with that, I should be able to give myself 4 or 5 small meals a day, which is what I need -- and if I usually have reconstituted beans available, I'll be able to get my protein easily (of which I need a lot -- I burn through carbs too fast).
A lot of this requires pantry storage, or some other form of storage, such as freezer space. And then to factor in my doomer requirements such as having food and water stored for six months worth of living... eesh. We'll see what's possible.
